This Flashpoint had me under false pretences (abeit of my own doing). I assumed that the Secret Seven of Flashpoint might be like the Secret Six of the old DCU. This issue however deals with Shade and the Enchantress as they…well I’m not sure what was going on to be honest. I’m not even sure as this issue stands what the relevance to Flashpoint actually was.
I’ve never read the original Vertigo series so I’m not familiar with the Steve Ditko version or Peter Milligan’s own take on the character back for the British Invasion of Vertigo back in the 90s. However this is definitely a Peter Milligan comic and reads like an extended Future Shock from 2000AD. Crazy dialogue, pacing and themes washed over me till I felt like someone had slipped a tab in my coffee. Was it a good comic? I have no idea. It will probably take another read at some point or the further issues to work that out. If you have read Milligan’s excellent X-statix then you’ll know that the satire and surreal humour is often laced in so thick you need to take a breather and re-read it.
The art is carried out by three different artists that add to the chaotic sense of the comic. George Perez, Scott Koblish and Fernando Blanco all pull in the chores and although its only near the end that the art duties switch is noticeable enough to knock you off your stride.
All in all this is less of a review and more a cry for a cuddle and reassurance everything will be ok. The comic is unsettlingly bad and good all at the same time. It’s an actual roller coaster of a comic that spins you around a bit. In fact before I finish off I’ll just re-read it.
Nope still confused.
